Our Patient Approach Philosophy

At the Center for Urologic and Pelvic Pain, we have a patient centered approach. Because pelvic pain is such an intrusive problem, we believe it is not enough to focus solely on your current medical condition. It is more effective when we can take a holistic approach to your care. Therefore, each patient, evaluated and treated byDr. Antolak, is advised to work with our coach on staff. Most of our patients have been treated by a psychiatrist or a psychologist because of depression or personal stress caused by their pudendal neuralgia problems. The combination of care using a life-coach better equips you to manage your situation, be adaptive to problem solving, remain goal oriented, and develop strong social supports. These healing relationships are seen as partnerships that empower you-the patient to move forward in life in spite of your pain.

Meeting Options for Coaching Sessions

Phone - Coaching was originally designed to coach clients over the phone. This is a very successful way of working together. It is a wonderful option for individuals that aren't able to get around easily, they are a distance away or simply don't have the time to meet face-to-face.

Face-to-Face - Another option is meeting in person. Many people feel that they need face-to-face interaction to stay focused, remain accountable and feel supported.

Online - Email is an additional option for individuals who relate better through the Internet. You can utilize this choice along with the face-to-face or phone to get the most out of your coaching sessions.

You are at choice which option you choose. In fact, you can combine all three if that works best for you.

Assisting the Center of Urologic and Pelvic Pain

Why Coaching?

We are committed to helping patients change behaviors so that they can achieve health improvement. We choose coaching as a viable avenue in assisting our patients for two key reasons.

1) Often patients need to or have been forced to make immediate changes in their lives and yet their readiness level to make these changes is not there. Typically, these patients understand what lifestyle modifications they need to take however changing lifelong behaviors are difficult. We believe through coaching they can discover for themselves effective ways to shift behavior and achieve health improvement.

2) Many times patients have a history of being directed to see a psychologist or counselor to deal with emotional and mental issues related to their pain. There are even those that are told that it is all in their heads and that they need to see a psychiatrist. Whatever the case, many of these patients feel these directives somehow make them wrong or just plane crazy. We recognize that the pain is real and that it is a large obstacle to deal with as you try to continue live your life. We believe that coaching is a supportive and encouraging method for working with patients to keep them on track and focused on the important parts of their lives-the areas that feed them and keep them motivated.
